Ideal conditions prevailed for cruising during last week-end, and there ■was a light southerly breeze on Saturday afternoon and a northerly on Sunday. At Kawau several yachts and launches foregathered on Saturday evening. including Thelma, Waitangi. Rangi, Windward .and Avis. Mr. L. Nathan’s cruiser Atatu left Auckland on Friday evening for Kawau, spent Saturday evening at Onepu, and returned home on Sunday evening. * * * Prize after competing in the Squadron’s race to Man o’ War Bay on March 15, commenced a week’s ' ruise round the liauraki Gulf. She returned last Sunday evening, after seven days of perfect weather and ideal cruising?. Nga-Toa's “stick,’’ which she carried away recently, is back in place again, and this fine keeier was seen out cruising during last week-end. It was reported that she had obtained a. new mast, but this is not so. The “stick” that carried away has been spliced and restepped. She is to take part in the season’s remaining fixtures for her class. Twilight went to Matiatia on Saturday. and on to Rangitoto on Sunday afternoon. Other boats at Matiatia were Alexa. Heartsease, Muru, and the launches Mavis 8., Sheik, Phyllis M., and Coquette. The launches Silens »nd Rautangi arrived with picnic parties on Sunday. * * * Fishing outside Waiheke during the week-end were Maybelle, Huia, and ihe launch Kenya. They were fairly successful. The launch Nyria, after cleaning on Saturday night, went down to Motuapu on Sunday. She fished in the vicinity of Home Bay and had a fair amount of luck. Motuihi proved a big attraction for ooatlng men on Sunday, after the long period during which the island has been closed for quarantine reasons. Powered and sailing craft of all sorts were swarming in the bay near the wharf. One yachtsman estimated the number as over 50, which is an indication of the great popularity of the City’s marine park. The Akarana Yacht Clubs weekly dance will be held in the clubhouse tomorrow night. • • • The Akarana Yacht Club Is staging a big day next Saturday. There will be cruising races to Matiatia Bay direct for classes A to S and launches, and harbour races for M and other r 4if' sses ’ Entries close tomorrow. They will be received until 5 p.m. at John Burns and Company’s warehouse, and up till 9 p.m. at the Akarana clubhouse. * * * Valeria coppered on Saturday afternoon and went to Pine Island on Sunday. Up there were Kestrel. Daisy Gloriana. Mizpah. Wairere, Sun, Manu! Katie and Hetty. • • > Under the managership of Mr. L. A. Bouzaid, Sails and Covers, Ltd., of Anzac Avenue, have Utted out a large number of Auckland yachts with now suits this season. Prominent among tiiese are: The 26-footer .Spray, the :2-footers Rakoa, Otira, Kokiri the 18-footers Desdemona, Ranui and Sun the Marconi-rigged 16-footers Rangaura and Kangitiki, the 16-footer Narau and the 14-footer Slialimar. The performances of these boats have: im* preved greatly since obtaining their new sails, and in particular have •Sbdimar, Spray and Rakoa come into the limelight. The firm has also made a number of suits for Wellington. Christchurch and Dunedin boats this season.
The first class keeier lorangi went to Kakino for last week-end. Ilex looking well, was out on the harbouron Sunday. . . . The schooner-yacht Valykrie, which J has been away for some days, was ir> Bon Accord Harbour. Kawau, on Sumday. . . . A collision between the keel yacht Ngatira and the mullet-boat Sfjgrrro took place off the Motuihi wharf <Wing last week-end. Ngatira hatl fust taken up her pick and was about to get away, when her main sheet caught nfm er ,. the - c S unter - There war. some dilficulty in freeing it, and o?X‘ire this could be done, the keeier, nqvr out of control, rammed her bowsprit aboard Ngaro and lifted the mullety's coamings clean off the deck. In the following confusion the two lyc/ats, which were drawing close to the wharf almost collided with it. The 16-footer Gannet has been reconditioned by Mr. Let,. Downie. and is now moored outside the Akarana. clubhouse. • • * Andrews, who sailed the Nyria in the Yacht Club race on Saturday, has been generally congratulated in his handling of the bejat. He was one of the boys selected to sail for his club in the Cornwell Cup series and is showing great promise. Saturday wegsk will be the final day for the seasoai on the Manukau, the Yacht and Ortrising Club holding a joint series of races. The resail of the first race of the season wlfen Daphne capsized is set down for the same date. •I he courses for yachts and launches nave >et to be determined. • « * On Saturday next the Ponsonbv cruising Club is entertaining representatires of the Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club. The visitors will bo conveyed to Islington Bay by the motor-yacht Linda, which has been lvtndfty lent by Mr. E. J. Kelly. Mr George Dennis has placed his seaside honso at the bay at the disposal of entert o\ nin s club - and a social evening will be held there. It is understood that Mr. Dennis is arrangins an aquatic carnival for the following morning.
