DARING BOYS
THREE BURGLARIES DURING WEEK-END ARRESTED AT MERCER Recaptured by the police at Mercer j yesterday after having escaped from i the Mount Albert Boys’ Probation ; Home on Saturday; two boys, aged IS | and 12, admitted having broken into j three shops at Avondale. Point Cliev- j alier and Grey Lynn, during the weekend. The boys had twopence between them when arrested. They were * noticed by Constable Olsen, of Mercer, as they walked through the town shortly before midday, and detained ■ until the constable made inquiries. As j a result of his inquiries he held the , boys in custody until the Child Wei- ' fare officer reached Mercer by motor car from Auckland and took the boys [ back to tlie Probation Home. The boys admitted breaking into | Fearon Brothers’ butcher’s shop. : Point Chevalier, where a strip of j gauze was removed from the doorway and the lock forced. No money was ! taken, but a bicycle valued at £7 10s i was removed from the shop. R. and W. Hellaby’s butcher’s shop at Avondale was entered in a similar manner, a few* pennies being stolen from the till, and a third shop, a grocer’s premises at Surrey Crescent, Grey Lynn, was entered by the fore-1 ing of the front door lock, though nothing of value was stolen. Signs of an attempt on the lock of a nearby j iminter’s shop were also apparent, but no entrance was effected. I The boys told the constable at | Mercer that they had used practically ! all their money in travelling by train | from Newmarket to Mercer. They then set out from Mercer Station to walk to Te Aroha to get work. They ! said they had left the bicycle in Auckland. The boys will appear before the Children’s Court. ■
