ELLERSLIE TRAINING
THIS MORNING’S WORK NORVAL TEA’S FAST HALF Training operations at Ellerslie this morning were not brisk, but with the Whangarei fixture toward the end of next week a number of horses with engagements there completed useful tasks. The course proper, with the pegs out 55 feet, and No. 2 grass, were the tracks available, but they were only in fair demand. Rain overnight tended to take the jar out of the I ground. Course Proper Eager Rose was despatched over a i round to record 2.22 1-5, and as the time indicates, the effort was only a satisfactory work-out. The daughter of Day Cqmet is very bright and muscular at present, and the intention is to race her at Te Rapa preparatory to taking on the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. She will probably have L. Manson as her pilot at the Waikato meeting. Currajong and Wild Country disposed of half a mile in 54 1-5, carving out the initial furlong in 13 1-5. The former had a bit the best of matters, but both were asked to do it in the last furlong. After breakfast Kauri Park covered a circuit evenly. The barrier at the new mile post was at the disposal of trainers for : barrier practice, a number of two-year-okls and some older horses being taken to the tapes. Included in the number were Thespis, Tremetus, Raffiliglit, Karangapai, Thunderstorm, Our Comet, Glittering Gold, Real McKay, Peach Brandy—Omana colt, and a Kilbroney—Dancing Doll filly. No. 2 Grass Royal Lover, Avon Court, and Tambourine were associated over four furlongs in 54 1-5, the first leading all the way, and finishing a bare length ahead of Avon Court. That Corinax is in nice order for future engagements was demonstrated when he led Gemlight and Kawainga over seven furlongs, the last six taking 1.17 4-5. Good Idea went easily over half a mile in 55 1-5, and for the last seven furlongs of a round Bright Land registered 1.32 1-5. The speedy but disappointing Norval Tea led Measurer over four furlongs in 49 4-5, the first furlong in .12 1-5. When she comes solid, Norval Tea can l>e depended on to win more than one race. Marita made 1.22 2-5 for six furlongs, and he was under a steady pull. Mon Star secured a break on Sir Archie and Roman Pearl when they were in company from the six furlongs post, and maintained her advantage to the end, taking 1.17 —fairly good time. Kerry Dance (E. Garrett) and Kamehameha (11. McNeil) were partnered over several pony hurdles, the latter giving the more polished’ display. Kerry Dance is improving, however.
