OUTBOARDS DISPUTE OVER BARGE ,r— INCIDENT ON THE WHAU j I Rowing officials and outboard motor enthusiasts met in a spirited, ! wordy battle at the Whau on Satur- ! day afternoon. Tho outboard divisin of the New | Zealand Power-Boat Association was ' holding Cup Day and the inter-provin-cial eight-oar championship was on the same programme, but under differ- ; ent control. The rowing skiffs had been towed down on a barge, which ' was used by the outboard officials as a starting platform. The outboard programme had fallen behind scheduled time, and efforts were being made to get the remaining events off in good time when the officials were astounded to hear an order, ’’Everybody off the barge I” Turning, they discovered Mr. Val Dunne, a rowing enthusiast, minus coat, pulling at a rope and delivering orders to other rowing men. Mr. G. Hunt approached Mr. Dunne and explained that the outboard, officials had permission to use the barge, but Mr. Dunne was adamant. Mr. E. R. Butler, one of the officials, said that the outboard officials, at a committee meeting, had been informed by the rowing officials that the barge would be available as a starting platform for the power-boats. It was decided to continue the racing, and the starting point was changed to a small wharf about 100 yards away The outboard men had just become settled when some rowing enthusiasts desired to climb the wharf steps to reach the land. It meant moving the starting clock, and in view of the treatment just received, the officials demurred. Mr. C. Wilson, the handicapper: We j delayed our programme for them and i this is how they treat us. And now j they’re here again. A Rowing Man: What’s the trouble? ! Mr. Hunt: You’ve kicked us off the barge and now you want to come here. Arrangements were made for us to use the barge, and we are kicked off after waiting an hour for you to run a race. We’ve had dirty treatment from your association. It was only after considerable difficulty that the rowing men got past the irate “outboarders.”
