DEPRIVING CHILDREN

PLAY ON SUNDAYS IN PARKS RATIONALISTS CRITICISE COUNCIL The Auckland City Council deprives children of the means of healthy recreation on Sundays. This is the opinion of the New Zealand Association for the Avancement of Rationalism. The association also points out that the Zoo and its attendant amusements are open on Sundays to those who can afford to pay for them. The situation was discussed at a meeting of the association recently and the following resolution was passed: “That the secretary write to the Auckland City Council asking it kindly to indicate why it sets out to deprive the children on Sundays of the means of healthy recreation on the various apparatus provided for their enjoyment in public parks and playgrounds, seeing that the Council opens the Zoo and its attendant amusements on Sundays for those who can afford to pay the admission fee charged by the Council. “Further, that in Dunedin and some other cities of the Dominion no 6uch restrictions are imposed upon the use of apparatus in the playgrounds.” The executive is awaiting the reply of the council as to why this anomalous position is permitted to exist.
