EPSOM JOTTINGS
THAMES PREPARATIONS ! } Stony is showing wonderful imI provement of late for Trainer Tuke, and on Saturday he rattled j off a mile in a fashion that shows that the white horse will not be ! long now in getting on the wining list. He put plenty of dash | into the task, and finished full cf running. * * * Owner Brain is still experiencing difficulty with Haroto, ancl the gelding is finding the hard tracks very much against him. He is nice and bright in appearance, but was not asked for any tiling beyond mediumpace on Saturday. Signor is standing up to his work well, but no severe tasks have been exacted from the grey pacer. Trainer Birch all has him looking well, but is careful with the preparation on account of dickiness in one of Signor’s legs. Haerenga Pai is bowling along freely in her work, and should strip in forward condition at Thames. If the mare decides to go right in her races she would make it interesting for the opposition. Rosie Thorpe is improving under the. careful tuition of W. Cockbill, and her latest track essays have been encouraging. The chestnut mare has not raced for some time, and this may be against her at the Thames. Idle Girl is working now with the larks, and the attention she has received from her patient young trainer is bearing good results. The youngster has a nice turn of speed, but
may at present find 12 furlongs too far. George Stubbs has worked a. great change on Rady Yvonne, as far as condition is concerned, the pacer having furnished into a nice stamp of mare. When she learns to go at an even gait, Rady Yvonne should race fairly well. * * * Poor old Speed King,' in the same stable, is plodding along quietly, his owner being unable to ask him serious questions until the sting is gone from the footing. In being placed on 3.38 at Thames the big fellow was paid an undeserved compliment, as lie has nothing to recommend him from that position. ♦ * * Nelson Girl is showing some improvement since joining A. Julian’s stable. The mare is still inclined to leave her feet on the least provocation, but when she is cured of the habit, there will be some money in sight for her people. * * * Gaza continues to perform his daily tasks in solid style, and is showing improvement as a result of recent racing. Over a mile course he can go pretty quick, and if set directly for the saddle heat on Saturday would take some catching. * * * Rord Haldane is trotting steadily at headquarters, and in his track tests shows no inclination to go away at the pacing gait. However, on race day, it is a question of the standing start, and it is when in this position the ex-pacer refuses to go away at the square gait. Otahuhu Topics That solid trotter Peterson, who raced consistently for Tom Roe this season, has given up the game for all time. The Petereta gelding was going along all right in his work, but last week he contracted internal troubles, from which he died. In reporting the occurence to the writer, Peterson’s owner remarked that when the trotter heard of his Thames handicap he died from shock. * *f> * Marionette is hitting out in good style on the suburban track, and her displays are giving Owner Cutts fresh heart. Ratterly the mare is showing an inclination to go a journey, and she may tackle the slow two-mile heat at Thames. ♦ * * Some Dillon is doing everything asked of him in good style, and providing he will behave himself when taken t-> the races, T. G-rimmond’s charge should soon add to his list of successes. The Peter Moko gelding has a fine turn of speed and gives an indication of being able to see out a journey. Great Ballin is putting plenty of vim into his work, and if ho would act accordingly on race day Garth Robertson would have good prospects (,£ saluting the man in the box. In his last few starts the Ballin representative has not been 'too clever at the start. * * * Trustworthy is coming along nicely since the Otahuhu fixture, and she promises to race prominently in her next engagements. The daughter of Worthy Bond looks more in racing trim than for some time past, and if taken to Thames will have a chance in the ten-furlong heat. * * * The latest additions to J. T. Paul’s Mangere stable ore the young trotter Great Gold and Warspite. The latter will be given a preparation for the big race at Claudelands. and providing he goes along the right way must be labelled dangerous. Great Gold, educated to the trotting gait by George Webb, was showing good from at Epsom, and will be later taken to one of the cquntry meetings by J. T. Paul. Although no strenuous work is be- | ing set Realty, the son of Real Guy is I m good health and forward enough to [ step out merrily in the saddle race at Thames. He has a fair record to date in this particular class of event.
