There were two sensations at the IJawkesbury races, held at Moorefield on Saturday. U. Bartle rode five winners and one second in seven starts lor the day, and Nightmarch was the object of a hostile demonstration when he came Third in the Autumn Handicap, one and a-quarter miles, which resulted: >; a Y, e O Dweller, 8.1, Simpson, 1; Charlie H, 8.0, Goddard, 2; 1 Nightmarch, 10.7, R. Reed, 3. Nine started. Won by six lengths, the third horse being two lengths away. Time, 2.6, a track record. The crowd greeted the Xew Zealander’s return to the enclosure with sarcastic questions: “How could you have won the Kpsom Handicap and the Melbourne Cup.” and cries of “robbers,” and demands that the coroner be summoned. Cave Dweller’s run was a great one, which under any circumstances would have tested the best of champions, and he was criticised longhand loudlv for not showing Saturday’s speed a week earlier. Sporting writers ask that R. - Reed, rider of Nightmarch, should be required to show how he came to be jostled, and why his mount lost ground on the journey.
