FIRST TENDER LET

CONCRETE TO HOWICK MANUKAU COUNTY SECTION A contract tor concreting 32 miies of tlig roadway between Panmure and Hawick, all the section within the. Manukau County, has been let by a special committee of the County Council to H. Bray and Company, Ltd., of Onehunga, The contract also provides for the reconstruction of the present road, involving the alteration of many of the sharp' corners into wide curves and the easing of grades. Tho concrete strip, which is to be ISft wide and will have the usual 4ft shoulders on each side, will be laid in two Oft sections in several places to allow traffic to travel over the main route. In other places arrangements have been made for detours, and it is hoped that the public will be inconvenienced but little during the months of construction. The work is being subsidised by the Main Highways Board £3 for £l. It was recognised that the present macadam surfacing was becoming too expensive to maintain in view of the heavy traffic, which is increasing steadily. Work will begin on this section within a fortnight. This roadway, when completed to its eastern boundary by the Ho wick Town Board within the next few months, is expected to prove a popular one. It will give excellent access to the many beaches around I-lowick.
