POLICE PROMOTIONS
THREE NEW INSPECTORS ANNOUNCED mr. McCarthy transferred Press Association WELLINGTON, Friday. The commissioner of police, Mr. W. B. McTlveney, announced this afternoon the following promotions and transfers in the police force, to take effect on April 1:—-Sub-Inspector P. J. McCarthy, of Auckland, to be promoted to the rank of inspector, and transferred to the charge of the Invercargill district, in succession of the late Inspector Fahey. Sub-Inspector J. Lander, of Wellington, is promoted to the rank of inspector and Is attached to headquarters staff for duty as relieving inspector throughout the Dominion. Sub-Inspector J. Cummings, of Dunedin, is promoted to the rank of inspector and is placed in charge of the
Dunedin Central district, which will be constituted under the co-ordinated district system in force in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Senior-Detective C. W. Lopdell, of Wellington, is promoted to the rank of sub-inspector and replaces SubInspector Lander at Wellington. Senior-Sergeant Thomas Gibson, of Time.ru, is promoted to the rank of sub-inspector and will take charge of the detective staff at Auckland. Senior-Sergeant R. R. J. Ward, of Wellington, is promoted to the rank of sub-inspector and wall take charge of the detective staff at Wellington. The appointments of Sub-Inspectors Gibson and Ward will place the detective staffs at Auckland and Wellington in charge of commissioned officers in future.
Senior-Sergeant T. Shanahan, of Christchurch, is promoted to the rank of sub-inspector in the uniform branch at Auckland. Senior-Sergeant J. J. O’Grady, of Auckland, will replace him at Christchurch.
Senior-Sergeant John Powell, of Napier, is transferred to the Auckland Central station to replace Senior-Ser-geant O’Grady. Senior-Sergeant John A. Dempsey is transferred from Hastings to Wellington to replace Sub-Inspector Ward. Sergeant I. H. Mathieson is reappointed to the grade of senior-ser-geant and is transferred to Timaru. Sergeant A. B. J. Stark, of Franktou station, is appointed senipr-ser-geant at Napier. Sergeant W. E. Packer, of Gore, is appointed seniorsergeant at that station. Sergeant B. J. Carroll, of Tokomaru Bay, replaces Senior-Sergeant Dempsey at Hastings. Sergeant R. R. Millar, of Newmarket, Auckland, takes charge of Tokomaru Bay station. Sergeant E. Finch, district clerk at Wanganui, takes charge of Newmarket. Sergeant T. Moriarty, district clerk at Palmerston North, takes charge of Frankton station. Sergeant C. Harley, district clerk at Timaru, replaces Senior-Sergeant Mathieson at Hamilton.
Constable J. Kennedy, of To Kuiti, takes charge of Panmure station, Auckland. Constable T. J. Collins, of Auckland, goes to Te Kuiti.
Mr. McCarthy joined the police force at Auckland in the year 1899, serving as a constable in Auckland and tho Waikato until 1914, when he was promoted to sergeant at Cambridge. In 1917 he went to Invercargill, later going to the West Coast as seniorsergeant. Two and a-half years ago ho came to Auckland, being promoted to be sub-inspector six months later.
