EXEMPTION FROM RATING
CITY MISSION’S OFFICES UNSUCCESSFUL APPLICATION An application for exemption of certain offices in the Auckland City Mission’s buildings a 4 the corner of Wellesley Street and Albert Street was made to the Assessment Court for the City of Auckland by the Rev. Jasper Calder yesterday. Mr. Calder explained that the offices for which he was making the request were used in connection with the distribution of charitable aid and relief. No objection was raised to the rating of the portion of the building that was let but it was considered that the chapel, mediclil clinic and offices used by the mission workers should be exempted. The section of the Rating Act, 1923, giving exemption to land and buildings used for the purposes of a charitable institution lfcr maintainence or relief of the needy was cited in support of his claim by Mr. Calder who also quoted the section relating to the exemption of chapels. Mr. P. F. Notley said that the Court had no jurisdiction to give exemption from rating, and the chairman, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., affirmed this contention.
Mr. Notley said that he had treated the case leniently, the value of certain offices having been reduced from £404 to £ 346.
