OPOTIKI NOTES

From Our Own Correspondent OPOTIKI, Friday. There will be an open game season cf two months this year in the Opotiki district, according to advice from the Tourist Department, read at a meeting of the Opotiki Hod and Gun Club held on Thursday evening. In reply to the club’s request for perch the department stated that it was the first inquiry it had ever had for perch. On the motion of Mr. Bennett it was decided to approach th€: department with the request that the Waimana River should be restricted to fly and artificial bait fishing. It was decided to appoint two committees to look after the interests of fishing and shooting, respectively. The department will be asked to appoint a ranger for the Opoliki district prior to the opening of the shooting season. The secretary was instructed to inform the Tourist Department that brown trout were available in the Toa Toa Stream. * * * The Mayor (Mr. G. S. Moody) presided at a meeting held at Opotiki on Wednesday evening, when an appeal was made by Miss Carnahan for funds in aid of the establishment of a professor of obstetrics at the Otago University, at a salary of £2,000 per annum. It was stated that such an appointment was necessary in order that medical men may be more fully trained in the science of obstetrics. At the conclusion of Miss Carnahan’s address a committee of ladies was formed to canvass for funds. * * * As a result of representations made by the Bay of Plenty Power Board to the Public Works Department, arrangements are now being made to provide the board’s district with a dual supply of electricity. Alterations to the existing Government line between Arapuni and Edgecumbe are necessary to attain this objective, and the work is now in progress. When the alterations are completed the Bay of Plenty area will be connected with both the Arapuni and Whikarqmoana stations, and will be in a position to obtain pow,er from either source.
