NEW WHAU BRIDGE

28FT STRUCTURE APPROVED WAITEMATA COUNCIL VIEWS Approving* of tho construction of a 28ft wide reinforced concrete bridge over the Whau Creek, to replace the old wooden structure, the Waitemata County Council yesterday accepted lli per cent, as being its share of the cost of the new structure. The apportionment was based on traffic tallies taken last January and it is estimated the council’s share will be £32S. The county engineer, Mr. A. Murray, estimated tho cost of a 28ft bridge at £5,450, of which £5,600 would be provided by tho Main Highways Board, leaving local bodies to contribute £2,850. A 50ft wide bridge would cost £1,300, toward which the Main Highways Board would find £ 5,600, calculated on a £2 for £1 subsidy basis on a 28ft structure. The council would have to find £BSO if a bridge of this size was built. He advised acceptance of the apportionment of the cost, and suggested the council should not object to a 50ft bridge, as he considered that in 10 years it would be necessary to widen a 28ft structure.
