THE BUSH

| Giant kauri, tall and fine, King of the forest and brother of the pine, ! Clematis high of palest hue, 1 Supple-jacks sturdy, steadfast and ! true; Moss like a carpet, soft and green. Songs of the birds that steal between Punga ferns in a broken line And trees adorned with silVery vine. A babbling brooklet winds through the glade; A flower, alone, seeks a fern’s cool shade. Then night in a dream comes sailing by. And the silence is broken by a morej pork’s cry. —Dagmar King, aged 14.
