ORCHARD CULTIVATION

Stir the soil to a depth of two to four inches once a week, and a day or so after each heavy rain or watering. Keep up cultivation throughout the late spring, summer and autumn. Orchards should be regularly cultivated for two or three years after planting. Cover crops can be sown in the late spring in stone fruit orchards and removed the following j autumn. Orchards of apples, pears and cherries do not need such regular cultivation when once established save vo assist in the conservation of moisture. Peaches, nectarines and similar fruits need, however, to be cultivated well and regularly throughout their whole life. Citrus trees also require regular waterings when the fruit is on the tree and should be kept moving at all times by thorough cultivation. There is nothing like it for producing bumper crops. Remember that proper cultivation means the working of the whole area planted. For individual trees and plants in a lawn, etc., cultivation, a circle according to the size of the plant, from two to six feet about the tree, will prove sufficient.
