SOVIET THROWS DUST IN PEASANTS EYES ANTI-GOD DEMONSTRATIONS Kecd. 1.5 p.m. LONDON, Thurs. A British United Press report from Moscow says that through official journals the Russian people were told that Europe’s Sunday services as a protest against religious persecution had fizzled out, and that on the contrary, workers in the chief European capitals demonstrated against the churches and pledged their support to the Soviet. Pope Pius XI. is the target for bitter cartoons, which generally depict him as the protector of Fascists, Imperialists and the well-to-dos. RUMOURS ABOUT STALIN Berlin and Riga messages both report that Stalin is on the eve of resigning owing to young Communists’ resentment at his failure rigorously to carry out a campaign against the peasants. An official Tass Agency message from Moscow, however, dismisses this story as ridiculous.
