£200,000,000 SHORT

BRITAIN PAYS DEBTS TO UNITED STATES SNOWDEN’S STATEMENT Reed. Noon. RUGBY, Wednesday. Replying to a written Parliamentary question, Mr. Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer, says the total sums paid to tlie United States on account of the British war debt by the end of the present financial year will be £279,473,000. Against this we have received to the same date approximately £95,000,000 on account of reparations and £48,825,000 on account of Allied war debts. The aggregate receipts, therefore, fall short of the aggregate payments by over £132,000,000 and the deficiency is close on £200,000,000, if interest on past payments and receipts is taken into account.
