SOUND GOVERNMENT
LESSON FROM TONGA NATIVES LEAD THE WAY Few Governments are in the happy position of that of the Kingdom of Tonga. In a statement of assets and liabilities issued by the Tongan Treasurer for October last there is an excess of assets over liabilities of £153,171; a statement for* November shows the favourable balance at £155,222. Total assets for November did not amount to over £176,450 but, nevertheless, the natives in this little part of the Pacific are apparently giving a practical demonstration to the rest of the world, and showing that it is possible to maintain a country’s finances on the right side of the balance sheet. Tonga is the only country in the world without a national debt and with a surplus in the treasury.
