DRUNKEN THEFT
TRYING TO GET MONEY FOR DRINK OLD OFFENDER GAOLED With 31 previous convictions to his discredit, William Anderson was sentenced at the Police Court this morning to six months’ imprisonment for theft, lie pleaded not guilty, his excuse being that he was so drunk he could remember nothing of the affair. Anderson, described as a bookmaker, aged 47. was charged with stealing four pieces of carpet valued at 10s, the property of persons unknown. Constable Slater said he arrested Anderson yesterday, shortly after lie had come out of gaol. His story was that he was so drunk that he could not remember where the carpet lengths came from. According to Elsie Xichol, a dealer. Anderson had brought the carpets into her shop last Friday and asked what she would give for them. He was under the influence of liquor, so she ordered him out. When he went out on the street Anderson saw a constable. so threw the carpets in an alley-way, where witness recovered them. “He was in gaol last year for theft, too,” commented Air. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., sentencing Anderson to six months’ imprisonment.
