ACADEMIC CLUB FIRST ANNUAL MEETING The Academic Club held its first annual general meeting last evening. The president, Mrs. Annie Morris, presided. The treasurer reported a good financial position and during the year the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary had been donated £3. Although the club has only been in existence for one year a choir and an orchestra has been formed and were making good progress. Seabrook in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Thelma St: Clair Whyte. Miss St. Clair Whyte was gowned in beige and rose georgette and wore a rose-coloured hat to tone. brook wore pink french voile with a blue ballibuntal hat. .and Mrs. Brook had on a pretty floral georgette jumper suit with black Bangkok bat. MOTHERHOOD OBSTETRIC ENDOWMENT FUND MANY MEETINGS CONVENED A largely attended meeting was held recently at Papatoetoe. when Lady Robertson and Airs. < \ E. Maguire gave addresses in the interests of the Obstetrical Endowment Appeal. A strong committee was set up with Airs. Bryant as president. It was agreed that a house-to-house canvass be made in the district. A public meeting was held in the St. Cuthbert’s Mission Hall, Faultier Avenue, West End, last evening, Mrs. W. A. Cooke, convener and treasurer for the district, presiding. Dr. Buckley Turkirigton. in wellchosen words, expounded the need of a Chair of Obstetrics from the medical point of view, and Aliss Basten spoke of the practical side. In Miss Basten’s opinion it was very unfortunate that when launching the appeal no men had been invited to assist in the organisation and work. Alen were in-

terested in and very sympathetic toward the appeal, and a great number of them would have been prepared to give their time as well as money for such a worthy object. Airs. W. A. Cooke reported that the sum of £39 was already in hand, and outlined the organisation set up for the canvassing of their own area. At the close a sub-committee consisting of Airs. W. J. Jones, Airs. Henderson, Airs. Blanks and Airs. Jackson, was set up with power to add to their number. Airs. Jones consented to act as convener and secretary. MEETING AT POXSONBT The opening meeting of the St. John’s Methodist Women’s Guild was held in the school hall yesterday afternoon, a large number of members being present. After finalising all the business which had accumulated during the recess of four months, the meeting became a public one, a number of visitors coming in to listen to Dr. Buckley Turkington’s stirring appeal for the need of a Chair of Obstetrics. The Rev. Arthur Mitchell presided. At the close of the address several important questions were satisfactorily answered by the doctor, and all present were enthusiastic in their desire to help raise the district quota” of £250. Dr. Buckley-Turk-ington, the organiser, gave an address and explained the objects of th© appeal. Dr. d© Castro and Dr. Isaao also spoke on the subject.
