FEW CHAINS SHORT

TRAM EXTENSION ALONG THREE KINGS ROAD ROAD BOARD DISSATISFIED Some surprise was expressed by the members of the Mount Eoskill Road Board, at its meeting last evening, when it was reported that it was the Transport Board’s intention to terminate the proposed Mount Eden tramway extension along Three Kings Road, some few chains short of Mount Albert Road. The chairman of the works committee, Air. E. A. Pearce, reported that owing to an objection by the Public Works Department to allow a tramway terminus on an incline, the Transport Board had practically decided to select a level piece of Three Kings Road for the terminusThe chairman, Air. E. F. Jones, contended that one of the conditions of the recent loan poll provided for a tramway the full length of Three Kings Road, and anything short of that constituted a breach of faith with the ratepayers who voted for the loan. On the motion of Mr. S. I. Goodall it was decided to aslc the Transport Board at what point it proposed to fix the terminus and to point out that the Roskiil Road Board is under the impression that the terminus is to be at the junction of Mount Albert. and Three Kings Roads, and desires to know if this is correct.

The question of providing two concrete carriageways along Three Kings Road was advanced a stage by the receipt of a report by the board’s engineer in which he estimated the cost at £15,565, including footpaths, kerbs and retaining walls. The engineer was instructed to proceed at once with the preparation of plans and specifications for submission to the Local Bodies’ Loans Board, preparatory to taking a poll of ratepayers on the question of a loan for the work. FOOTPATH REPAIRS The Transport Board wrote agreeing to effect repairs to the footpaths in Dominion Road which were extensively damaged during the recent tramway extension works, provided the cost did not exceed £SO. The clerk to the road board reported that the damage done was estimated at £3OO and that a portion of it had been done by the Gas Company and the Post and Telegraph Department. Members, however, considered that the Transport Board’s offer was inadequate and referred the question to the engineer to assess the amount of the damage done. The tender of W. E- Patterson was accepted for the removal of household refuse, at a price of £5 2s 6d a week, with an additional lid a week for each house not included in the existing specification. A vote of thanks was accorded Air. TV. J. Jordan, M.P., for his successful efforts in having the metal reserve at Three Kings vested in the board. It was also agreed to request Mr. Jordan to urge upon the authorities the necessity for expediting the transfer of a number 1 of small reserves from the Crown to the board. The board declined the proposals of the Associated Societies for permission to take up street collections on seven days of the year on the ground that the committee of local bodies had restricted the collections to four days. The question was referred to that committee. As the outcome of a report by the I works committee, the engineer is to submit a report on the question of i straightening White Swan Road and { rebuilding the bridge crossing the White Swan Creek.
