In the Market Place
BANANAS ARRIVE POOR APPLES AND PEARS Inferior apples and pears are oversupplied on the City Markets. Large quantities of all grades are coming forward, but buyers’ attenion is principally confined to the better lines. Good Louis Bon pears are selling i under a fair inquiry, and good lines j of apples are maintaining last week’s j rates. \ A small shipment of bananas —for j this tim€> of the year—came by the j Tofua from Suva this morning. It is expected that the supply will be bought up quickly. Banana prices .have been firming gradually in the past week or so. Plums, apart from occasional lines, are finished. Hothouse grapes are plentifully supplied. Tomatoes are not so plentiful as last week and supplies from the South notably Hutt. have been reduced. Prices are higher. Potatoes, onions, kumeras, cabbages and lettuces are especially heavily supplied in the vegetable auctions. Most vegetables in season are well stocked and clearances are by no means brisk.
