CLIMBING HIMALAYAS
EXPLORERS BEGIN THREEYEAR EXPEDITION TO ASCEND KUNCHINJUNGA Reed. 9.5 a.m. DELHI, Monday. A scientific party that is exploring and climbing Kunchinjunga has arrived at Delhi, where final arrangements are being made . Members of the Himalayan Club are giving all possible assistance, and General Birdwood is lending a Gurkha officer. The expedition is expected to occupy three years. Kunchinjunga is one of the loftiest of the Himalayan Mountains, and for a time was thought to be the second summit of the globe. It lies about 75 miles south-east of Mount Everest, and is extensively glaciated. It has two peaks, the west one of which is 28,156 feet high.
