Ohinemuri Club Scores A Remarkable Success
Splendid Racing and Soaring Finances
The annua! race meeting of the Ohmemuri Jockey Club, concluded at Paeroa yesterday, with an in- ! crease of £536 in gate receipts and ' a slight advance of totalisator returns, was the most successful since the boom times. It was not only from the financial viewpoint, however, that this popular ! club scored such a great success . The j fields throughout were good, and the racing excellent, a large number of ; exceedingly close finishes being witI nessed. keeping the spectators at a high j pitch both days. The weather was perfect, and the j track in fast order, while there was ! again a large attendance yesterday. The totalisator handled £26,307, | against £23,991 10s on the second day !12 months ago, an increase of £2,316 10s. For the meeting, the totalisator returns were £54,957, compared with £54,399 last year, representing an increase on this occasion of £SSS. The trophies won during the meeting were presented yesterday afternoon by the president, Mr. T. P. Vuglar. Keen Racing The. principal event, the ShawMemorial Handicap, saw a return to winning form of Sir Russell, who defeated Maori Boy and Desert Glow, j The winner ran about a good deal in j the straight, and still won handsomely. :On the other hand, Maori Boy was a j bit unlucky. The open sprint, the Paeroa Handicap, again resolved itself into a tough struggle, Branson getting a clear run on the rails to beat Awarere by a bead, J with Leitrim another head away, and j Takutama close up fourth. Awarere ! finished under the judge’s box. and had he gone anything like straight he I would have pulled it off. It was a i good performance under his big weight. I Clenotus defeated Boomerday after i a good finish in the Steeplechase, after they had negotiated the last fence on terms. Glenstar scored in the Hurdles after racing consistently since lie started the stick-clearing business just recently, and Tradesman won the two-year-old race again in good style, Bells of Shandon getting up right on the post to share second money with Wild Time. The excellent management of the fixture tended to make the gathering one of the most enjoyable of the circuit, the secretary, Mr. H. Poland, and his executive, being responsible for perfect organisation. The following are the notes on the racing, and det/iils of results: Handicap Hurdles There was good betting among the top-weights, Taumai being made favourite with £ 6UB, with a slight drop to Glenstar (£548) and Star Comet (£509). At tlie start Grand Arch made the early running from Flying Swift, Luxurious, Glenstar, Star Comet and Freyja, and when they had traversed seven furlongs Flying Swift was out making play from Taumai, Glenstar,
Star Comet, Grand Arch and FreyjaOnce into the back stretch Taumai took charge only to fall at the fence along the back, leaving Glenstar to lead into the straight three lengths clear of Grand Arch, who was six lengths clear of Star Comet and Flying Swift. Glenstar went on to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length from Grand Arch, who was two lengths ahead of Star Comet. Freyja was fourth and then came Flying Swift and Wako King. Hikutaia Hack Cup Snow Prince was made a firm fav°o U fo« e » carr y in ST £660, with Mauriaena ~~4BL an (l Grand Tea £464 next in demand. The winner, Quinsilia, only carried £96 and returned a dividend in Die vicinity of a quarter of a century. Starting at the top of the straight they came past the stand with Snow Prince leading Grand Tea, Mauriaena, Quinsilia, Perennis, Lucky Alice, Always and Measurer, the last two being Page Boy and Thurnus. Mauriaena showed up with a fast run turning into the back stretch and assumed command over Grand Tea, Lucky Alice, Perennis, Snow Prince, Quinsilia and Page Boy, who had worlced his way up on the outside. Page Boy was actually in front turning into the straight, while almost on terms was Mauriaena and Perennis, who were followed by Lucky Alice, Snow Prince and Quinsilia In a fine finish Quinsilia flashed up in a fast run to gain a close victory from Page Boy, who beat Perennis by half a length for second place. Snow Prince was right up, fourth, followed by Mauriaena, Lucky Alice and Always. Waitekauri Handicap Grand Spirit was always favourite and when the machine closed had a good call over Bells of Shandon, the pair carrying £BIB and £6lO respectively. The first day’s winner Tradesman was at a good price, carrying £358. Betterment got all the worst of the start, Tradesman going out very fast to lead into the back stretch from Oil King, Lapaway, Wild Time, Silene, Grand Spirit and Bells of Shandon. Tradesman was clear of Oil King at the half mile, and was attended by Lapaway, Wild Time, Silene, Betterment and Bells of Shandon. Tradesman had increased his advantage to two and a-half lengths by the time they hit the home turn, at this stage having command over Wild Time, Silene, Betterment, Oil King, Bells of Shandon and Grand Spirit. Tradesman always looked a winner in the run to the post, and won fairly comfortably, Bells of Shandon finished fast to get up and dead heat for second place with Wild Time. Grand Spirit was fourth and then came Silene and Lapaway. Shaw Memorial Handicap Lucy Bose was the public's selection carrying £823, with Maori Boy £733 and Desert Glow £627 next in demand. The winner. Sir Russell, carried £539. Lucy Rose led out of the straight closely pursued by Sir Russell, Tinokoa, Desert Glow, High Pitch, Luminary, Maori Boy (wide out), and Lady’s Boy Little separated Luminary, Lucy Rose and Sir Russell four furlongs from home, this trio being clear of High Pitch, Desert Glow, Maori Boy, Tinokoa, and Lady's Boy. Sir Russell led into the straight with a slight advantage over Maori Boy, Desert Glow (on the rails). Tinakoa.. High Pitch, Luminary and Lucy Rose. Sir Russell and Maori Boy ran about in the run to the post, Sir Russell securing the verdict by a length from Maori Boy, who was three-quarters of
! a length ahead of Desert Glow. Luc; 1 Rose was fourth, followed by Tinokoci Luminary, High Pitch and Lady’s Boa Waihi Handicap i Tenakohe was made a good favourite carrying £1,005, with Chromadyne i £713 next fancy, these two being th< . i only horses really backed. Norval Tei , | made the early running from Swee ! Whisper, Tenakohe, Chromadyne am J Merry Lu. Chromadyne ran into thirc > place at the half-mile, this being th< j only change in the order. Chromadyne j took charge approaching the turn anc j led into the straight from Norval Tea Tenakohe, Sweet Whisper and Merrj I Lu. There was a good finish betweer | Chromadyne and Tenakohe the lattei j getting up in the last stride to just j beat Chromadyne with Sweet Whispei I two and a-half lengths back third Then came Merry Lu, Norval Tea and Momonatui. Paeroa Handicap Leitrim was installed a firm favourite, carrying £ 826, but it was two | mildly-backed candidates, Branson j £363 and Awerere £359, who filled the places. Leitrim jumped away smartly at the start and after two furlongs had been covered was piloting Awarere, Takutama, Rose Lupin, British King. Kingfield and Branson. Town Bird ran to the front at the end of three furlongs to lead Takutama, Awarere, British King, Kingfield, Leitrim, Value and Branson. Awarere had displaced Takutama and Town Bird at the home turn, this trio being attended by Leitrim, British King and Kingfield, Branson essaying a strong run on the rails at this stage. In a good finish Branson came through strongly to beat
Awerere by a head, with Leitrim a head farther back. Takutama was right up fourth, followed by Kingfield, Value and Rose Lupin. Hauraki Plains Steeples Glenotus was made a strong favourite with £744, the next in demand being Mashoor £538 and Boomerday £421. Spalpiko went to the front at the start, leading over the first fence only to fall at the second, this leaving St. Warrigal in charge from Potoanui, Mashoor, Foxhound, Brundee Bov, Boomerday and Glenotus. When they had completed a round Foxhound had run to the front from St. ‘Warrigal, Boomerday, Potoanui, Odin, Glenotus and Mashoor. With a further round j covered Boomerday had taken charge, leading over the stand double from Odin, Foxhound, Glenotus, Potoanui and Brundee Boy. Crossing the top Glenotus began to move up to the leader, Boomerday, and the pair jumped the last fence with little between them, Glenotus going on to win nicely by one and a-half lengths from Boomerday, who was three-quarters of a length in front of Foxhound. Potoanui was fourth and then came Brundee Boy. Mashoor pulled up at the back the second time and St. Warrigal fell. Waikino High-Weight The fact that the promoted hack Awamutu was left at the post on the first day did not deter backers from installing him first choice over King Willonyx, the pair carrying £B9B and £629 respectively, with a drop to Prince Lu and- Lunette, who were equal third favourites with £438. Owairaka’s figures were £4lO, and he was at a decent price. Lunette got away badly and it was left for Prince Lu to leave the tapes smartly from Quinsilia and Awamutu, but before the end of a furlong Awamutu ran through quickly and set the pace along the back to Prince Lu, Dainty Manners, Quinsilia, Owairaka, The Lamb and Carlaris. The field drew together coming round the home bend and Awamutu had a clear advantage over Prince Lu, Owairaka, Dainty Manners, Quinsilia and Lunette. It looked a good tiling for the favourite a furlong from home, but in a good set to over the last 100. yards Owairaka asserted himself to win by a head. Awamutu was a length and a-quarter clear of The Lamb and then came King Willonyx (who finished fast) and Standfast. SECOND HANDICAP HURDLES Of £200; 15 miles 2 GLENSTAR (B. D. S. Runiney), 9.10, H.
