Richardson, formerly first < officer on the Athenic and other Shaw, 1 Savill and Albion Company vessels, has now retired from the service, and will take up his residence in Christchurch. Mrs. Richardson is a New Zealander. Mr. Richardsop was on the Corinthic during the war and made several trips to New Zealand. He was on the Athenic when he retired. Father M. Von Mehring, whose home is in Berlin, is making a tour of New Zealand, Australia, Java and Sumatra. He says that Germany is going ahead industrially, and that conditions there are rapidly improving. He is of the opinion that the eldest son of the present Crown Prince of Germany will restore the monarchy there, as he is very popular. During the war the Baron served with a German regiment and was severely wounded.' * .* * Mr. C. Russell, formerly of Dargavllle, took his family to England to see the country. He has been touring since last May. Mr. William Chalmers is an Orkney Island farmer, who has come out to take up land in Otago. He has a j family of four, and as times are too i hard in Orkney he decided to bring j his children to New Zealand where,! be says, they will have a better chance in life. Seven members of the personal j staff of Lord and Lady BlediSioe also \ arrived by the Corinthic, and went on to Wellington last evening to prepare ! for his Excellency’s arrival on Tues- j day. * * « Road transport in England is be- ■ I coming so congested that some action will have to be taken shortly, said Mr. i I S. Dale, formerly of Arts and General ! I Carriers, London. He stated that the ! i main road from London to Brighton j is so packed with traffic on Sundays 1 that if anything goes wrong with one ! car the whole stream of traffic has to i stop. Roads in England now are very good, and motor transport is taking passenger traffic from the railways to such : an extent that the railways and the 1 i motor transport people have comi 1 bined. The unemployed are being ! used for widening roads and making i new ones. There is some dissatisfac- ; I tion over the Government’s action in ; ! i aiding the funds allocated for roading for other purposes. This was done . by the late Baldwin Government, and - it Is proposed to do the same again this year. Mr. Dale’s firm specialised in the transport of antiques, pictures and pianos to all parts of England He is • on his honeymoon trip, but after mak- ' ing investigations in New Zealand he may go into business here.
