TARIFF INCREASE LEAKS BEFORE DUE DATE GOVERNMENT CONCERNED Reed. 10. SO a.m. CANBERRA, Toflay. So great were the clearances from bond last week that the Customs collections reached the record amount of £2,266,917. Some concern is said to in-evail in official circles regarding the apparent leakage of the tariff information, resulting in heavy withdrawals of goods from bond eoincidently with the decision to table a new schedule of import duties. HIGH WAGES THE CAUSE LONDON, Sunday. The “Daily Chronicle,” in an editorial says: difficulties are primarily due to labour insisting on high wages and comfortable conditions; behind ever-mounting tariffs this artificial standard has necessitated continuous borrowing, which has not always been productive. “It is obvious that Australia has been living beyond her means. The remedy is hardly to be expected from the Labour Government. By hoisting the tariff, it may reduce imports, but will not increase exports. Rather the reverse, for it will widen the margin of internal world prices for wool and wheat.”
