Desert Glow’s Ohinemuri Cup
AWARERE’S RETURN TO FORM O.JC.’S FINE DAY’S SPORT There was a. very large attendance j at Paeroa yesterday on the occasion j of the opening of the annual race j meeting of the Ohinemuri Jockey ! j Club, the weather being delightful, and I : the course in excellent order, if a bit hard. J The best of racing was provided, I many stirring contests rousing the | crowd to enthusiasm. ; The totalisator receipts were £28,048?., a decrease of £1,759 on List r’s return of £30,407£. With a very large increase in the gate takings the financial success of Saturday's sport would be more than assured. Excellent arrangements were made for the fixture, everything passing off without a hitch, the secretary, Mr. H. Poland, and his executive ensuing that the day's racing went off smoothly. A review of the leading events is given elsewhere. The following arc the notes on the % racing, together with full details of results:— Handicap Hurdles Horses were evenly backed in the opening event. Glenstar £405 beingonly a little better selection than Taumai £403. The winner, Daylight, carried £316. Daylight and Whaka j King made the early running from . Master Holey, Grand Arch and Glen- ; star. Passing the stand Daylight was still in charge from Whaka King, Taumai, Grand Arch, Glenstar, Oscar and Master Holey. Daylight and Grand Arch were together going down the back stretch the last time, attended by Taumai, Whaka King, Star Comet and Oscar. That waj the order into the straight, Daylight winning convincingly by three lengths from Taumai, Glenstar running up from a long way back to get third money. Then came Star Comet, Whaka King, Grand j Arch, Oscar and Master Roley. Karangahake Handicap Bells of Sharidon was made a good favourite, carrying £7lB, with Grand Spirit £628 and Wild Time £5lO next in demand. The winner, Tradesman, carried £230, and paid nearly double figures. When the field was let go Betterment was left and Grand Spirit lost lengths. Tradesman leading out from Oil King, Wild Time, Intaglio, Silene and Bells of Shandon. At the half-mile Tradesman still had command from Intaglio, Wild Time. Silene, Bells of Shandon, Oil King, Tapaway and Grand Spirit, who improved her position on the outside. Tradesman turned for home clear of Wild Time, Bells of Shandon, Intaglio and Grand Spirit, the leader maintaining his position to win by a length from Wild Time, with Grand Spirit a length away third. Bells of Shandon was fourth, followed by Intaglio and ; Silene. Grand Spirit looked a cerj tainty beaten. | _ Novice Handicap Principal £549 was made favourite with Chromadyne £ 522 and Royal Visitor £3BO next in demand. Norval Tea made the early running from Chromadyne, Thanks, Kilintlia, Principal Boy and Glenison. At the three furlongs post Norval Tea and Chromadyne were together leading Peruse, Principal Boy, Onewhero, Glenison, Thanks and Principal. Chromadyne held the lead and led round the bend clear of Norval Tea, Peruse, Glenison and Principal. Chromadyne went on to win easily from Principal by two and a half lengths, with Royal Visitor nine and a-lialf lengths away third. Norval Tea, who stopped badly, was fourth, followed by Peruse, Glenison and Merry Lu. Ohinemuri Cup Handicap Desert Glow was installed a firm favourite, carrying £1,264, with Royal Doulton £1,083 next in demand, with a big drop to the third choice Antique £623. When the field had settled down Maori Boy, Grand Tea and High Pitch were in line from Pompeius and Desert Glow*. Passing the stand the first time Maori Boy had charge from High Pitch, Antique, Pompeius, Desert Glow, Grand Tea and Royal Doulton. Down the back the oi'der was Maori Boy, High / Pitch, Desert Glow, Pompeius, Antique, Royal Doulton and Grand Tea. They j bundled entering the home stretch, ; Pompeius leading Maori Boy, Desert j Glow. Royal Doulton. High Pitch, Grand Tea and Antique. There was a desperate finish, Desert Glow getting j up to win by half a head from Royal ■ Doulton. who was half a head in front j of Maori Pompeius was only j half a head away fourth, followed by | Antique and Grand Tea. Komata Handicap Volimond £696, Awamutu £471, j
i Lucky Alice £389 and Mauriaena j £386 were the popular selections. Alauriaena. on the rails, began smartly, j leading Volimond, The Jack Jumper, j Always, Lucky Alice. Joy Girl and Flitter. When a furlong and a half had been covered, Measurer lost his rider. At the half-mile Mauriaena was still in charge, followed by Volimond. • Haviland, Lucky Alice, Flitter. The j Jack Jumper, Always and Snow Prince. I Alauriaena rounded the turn from Havi- | land, Lucky Alice, Volimond, and Flit- | ter, and went on to win nicely by a I length from Haviland, with Lucky | Alice three-quarters of a length back' I third. Then came Volimond, Snow i Prince. Always, Perennis and The ; Jack Jumper. St. Patrick's Handicap Lucy Rose was made a firm favourite. carrying £692, with Value £455 and Awarere £430 next best backed. Several horses dwelt at the start, including Lady’s Boy, Takutama, Value and Partial Eclipse. Awarere went out fast to make the pace from Lucy Rose, Kingfield, Town Bird, Leitrim, British King and Takutama. At the three furlongs post Town Bird had charge from Awarere and Kingfield with Takatama, Value and British King together, followed by Leitrim, Lucy Rose and White Ringlet. Town Bird led into the straight from Awarere, Leitrim, Kingfield, Value, Takutama and Lucy Rose. The finish was desperate, heads separating the placed horses, while right up in behind were Leitrim fourth and Kingfield next. McGuire Steeples From the opening of betting opar- 1 jat ions in the McGuire Steeplers ] J Mashoor, £BO6, was always a popular, favourite, there also being good support for Odin. £CIS, with the winner, Glenotus (£281), at a good price. When they were sent away from the tapes Spalupin made the early running with Boomerday in attendance, but the field had reached only the first fence when disaster overtook Spalpiko, and when they had completed a circuit Foxhound ran off, the pacemaker still having charge at this stage, with Boomerday, Odin, and Glenotus all being prominent. At the stands the last time Mashoor headed Spalupin (who was tiring) and he led Glenotus, Odin and Boomerday and Ah Weru, the only ones with any chance. Glenotus was overhauling the favourite two jumps from home, and his lepping was also better, and at the last fence the pair rose together. A stirring finish ensued over the last furlong and it was only in the last 50 yards that Glenotus wore Mashoor down to gain a half head decision. Eight lengths further back was Ah Wera in third place, and then followed Boomerday, Odin. Brundee Boy and Spalupin, lengths separating them. Netherton High-Weight Handicap It was not until the last event on the card, the Netherton Handicap, that a surprise win was recorded, Th-urnus securing a narrow victory and returning a double figure dividend. Favourites were Imperial Prince, £985, King Willonyx, £578, and Gemlight, £577, and the last-named was a trifle unlucky. Going* out of the straight Owairaka was making play from Luminary, Prince Lu, Gemlight, Lunette, The Lamb. Carlaris, Imperial Prince, King Willonyx, King's Guard and Thurnus, the last four losing ground at the start. Luminary took charge once into the back stretch, but he was closely pursued by Prince Lu, Owairaka, The Lamb, Lunette, Gemlight, Carlaris, King Willonyx, Imperial Prince and Thurnus, and crossing the top Lunette took over the role of pacemaker, turning into the straight followed by Thurnus, Luminary, Prince Lu, Imperial Prince and Owairaka. A good race resulted in the run home, Thurnus doing best to beat the fast finishing Gemlight by a head. Imperial Prince being a similar distance away in third place. Right up fourth was Carlaris. and then followed Lunette, King Wilft>nyx and King’s Guard.
