CASUALLY PICKING UP MATERIAL FINED £4 FOR THEFT Gleaning material for the cottage he was building at Avondalo fror.i neighbouring sections brought Evan John Thomas to the Police Court this morning. He was fined a total of £4 and ordered to make restitution of £2 2s. Thomas, a carpenter, aged 33, pleaded guilty through Mr. Sullivan to tho theft, at Avondale on August 10, of two window frames valued at 30s, belonging to William Johnstone, Irvine and, on August 1, of 12 fence posts valued at 12s, belonging to the North Auckland Land Board. Chief-Detective Hammond said accused was living in a cottage at Avondale. He had stolen the posts from Crown lands adjoining his own property and used some in a boundary fence- The sashes had been removed from an empty house, taken out of the structure with a hammer and chisel. He had used them in his own house. It was Thomas’s first appearance before the court for dishonesty.
Thomas was fined £2 10s on the charge of stealing the sashes and £1 10s on the second count. He was ordered to make restitution of a total of £2 2s. Accused was given two weeks to pay.
