COAL MINES OPEN AT OWNERS' TERMS POSSIBLE LEGAL DIFFICULTIES Reed. 10.20 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. Applications for work in the northern collieries have been received in sufficient numbers to render possible the opening of some mines. Canberra messages, however, state that the coalowners may be compelled by the Federal Cabinet to observe the award or the pre-stoppage rates in any offers of employment. It is said the owners have made their present move on the advice that the award is illegal, and this aspect is being feverishly investigated by the Attorney-General’s department. Earlier messages said the northern coalmine owners received a steady stream pf written applications for work in their collieries from former employees, also from unemployed men. Several personal applications also have been made at city and coalfields’ offices.
The owners are of the opinion that the reluctance of many of the men to apply for work will disappear when they learn that there is a prospect of their former positions going to others.
