TIMING LAUGHTER
SOLUTION OF DIFFICULT PROBLEM EXTRA LINES INTRODUCED One of the greatest problems confronting talking picture producers has been that of gauging the duration of the laughter following a piece of witty dialogue. Many schemes have been employed with varying success, but it remained for Victor Schertzinger, the director of Paramount’s “The‘ Laughing Lady,” starring Ruth Chatterton, to provide a practical working plan as the solution of this problem. Schertzin 'cr’s method, which was employed during the preparation of “The Laughing Lady,” consisted of providing “filler” lines after each possible laugh line or “gag” in the action of the story. The additional lines were made up of relevant but unimportant material, -which could be either cut out or left in, as the case demanded. Subsequently, after a special preview screening, it was possible to get a definite audience reaction to each situation. Where the audience failed to laugh, the “ad lib” lines were eliminated by cutting.
