Junior Tennis Tourney
Special to THE SUN WELLINGTON. Today. A move was afoot at this* week - meeting of delegates of the Now Zea - land Lawn Tennis Association, held in Wellington, to rescind a motion passed some time ago to hold a junior lawn tennis tournament once every two years and to substitute in its place a motion that a tournament to be known as the junior hard-court championship be held each year. The motion was defeated, the chiei argument against an annual function being that the studies of the children were upset by such gatherings. Thus is quite correct, but there seems to be no real reason why such a tournament should not be held during the Christ - mas holidays when the long vacation is on. The biggest objection to this - comes, of course, from the teachers who object to its interfering with their personal convenience. But should such arguments be allowed to prevail? Providing courts could be secured, and there certainly would not be much difficulty in Wellington, the summer holidays seem to provide a very suitable period for a junior tourney, and if the teachers cannot control it, then why should not the New Zealand Association? It is understood that the parent body is anxious to foster junior tennis, and if that is the case they should not leave this tournament to others.
