From Our Oion Correspondent TAURANGA, Thursday. At the Borough Council meeting held last evening, a letter was received from the Chamber of Commerce asking that a public meeting be convened by the Mayor, to consider what steps should be taken to have the site of the historic battle of Gate Pa restored and the site marked by some suitable memorial. The request was granted. The finance committee reported that all arrangements for raising the loans authorised by the ratepayers had been completed at a rate that would work out at oh per cent. The town clerk presented a statement showing that 97.99 per cent, of the total rates had been collectedThe quarterly returns from the electric department showed a substantial increase. Building permits for the year amounted to £35,000. The gymkhana in aid of the funds for the country queen, held on the show grounds yesterday, met with great success. The weather was ideal and there was a large attendance. All the events were run off in good time and the programme, being a varied one, plenty of amusement. The proewds were highly satisfactory and now place the countrv queen on top.
