Taranaki Pullet Seeks World Egg Honours BACKERS ARE CONFIDENT

“Nine, ten, the big black hen . . .’’ Another world’s record is coveted, and is near to achievement at Normanby, a South Taranaki town, whose chief present claim to fame is its egglaying competition and its cluster of hens. Since last April a Black Orpington pullet belonging to Mrs. D. M. Waddell, of Waitara, has laid 341 eggs, and the fiftieth week expires on Wednesday, thus allowing six days for the hen to lay three eggs to beat the present world’s record of 343 in 50 -weeks. Although at present in a heavy moult, Mrs. Orpington is confidently expected to make history, and should she do so her record will be extended over the full 52-weeks period. There is a hush each day as a hand feels for the standard-sized egg.
