DUMPING OF SEWAGE

MILFORD RATEPAYERS OBJECT TAKAPUNA COUNCIL MEETS Stating that all residents within a radius of I,oooyds were imcompromisingly hostile to the council’s proposal : to dump collected sewage into the i drainage works in the borough quarry | at Milford, Mr. C. S. Leahy headed a i deputation of protest to the Takapuna ! Borough Council last evening. He 1 announced that residents affected were , willing to investigate the engineering problems with the borough officials, but insisted upon the immediate cessation of the work meantime. The council decided to grant a stay of the work for 14 days. Permission was granted to the Takapuna Surf and Life-saving Club to use i the Strand Kiosk at Takapuna Beach as winter training quarters. Letters of appreciation were ordered to be sent to Messrs. T. Blomfield, S. V. Higrgins, H. L. Bowden and S. Boland, club members responsible for recent rescues of swimmers in difficulties. The fact that there has been a treble increase in the past three weeks in the amount of rates paid by defauters. the total being £1,246, was ascribed to the recent decision to prosecute all persons whose accounts were unpaid. Landsdowne Street, Bayswater, is to be tarred, but the work will not be put in hand until after the close of the financial year. The vexed question of the number ! of street collections in the borough was I definitely settled. The council re- ■ solved to limit these to five specific appeals each year, these being the Plunket Society, Poppy Day, St. John Ambulance Association, Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and | the Flag Day of the Ex-Servicemen’s j Club. A special meeting of the council was arranged for March 10, when various street works of major importance and the method of financing them will be ; discussed
