PAPAKURA AFFAIRS
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE From Our Own C&rrcsponclent PAPAKURA, Today. At the usual monthly meeting of the Papakura Chamber of Commerce, held last evening, Mr. H. E. McEntee presiding, the following remits for the forthcoming conference of the South Auckland Associated Chambers of Commerce were carried: ‘‘That the Railway Department be requested to stop the Wellington express, which passes through Papakura at 6 a.m., to set down passengers if required.” It was pointed out that this would enable passengers for any of the suburban stations between Papakura and Newmarket to arrive at their destination about two hours earlier than at present. At present, passengers have to : leave the Main Trunk at Mercer, and catch a slow train which does not arrive until 7.45. a.m. ‘‘That the Railway Department reduce all ordinary fares to compete effectively with road transport.” Mr. Willias remarked that the' return fare from Papakura to Auckland before the war was 2s, and it was now 3s. The old fare, in his opinion, would bring a lot of the lost traffic back to railway travel. ."That compulsory military training be abolished, and that the country revert back to the voluntary system,” This remit provoked a good deal of discussion,, but amid much opposition it was carried, with a view to getting a good discussion at the conference. "That tlie Railway Department be strongly urged to s-peed up some of the slow trains, which have driven much traffic to the buses.”
