KIRKWOOD PUZZLED
PLAYS WELL ON STRANGE GOLF COURSE ONE DOWN IN FOUR-BALL SYDNEY, Wednesday. Owing to the injury caused to j Walter Hagen's left hand by the ex- | plosion of a box of matches yester- ! day, the American golfer, acting on a | doctor's advice, could not partner J. 1 H. Kirkwood in the four-ball match . over IS holes against I. Harrison and 1 \\ alter Clark at Killara links today. ' ivo Wliitton, Australian open champion, agreed to play in Hagen’s place. Harrison is the Killara Club's champion and Clark its professional. They won the match by oue up. A feature of the game was Clark’s excellent round of 70. His local knowledge obviously helped him considerably. He also gave a great display on the greens. Kirkwood also went round in 70, but it took him until half-way to find the pace of the greens. Then he became ■ 100 strong and on several of the j greens took three putts. He and Whitj ton were 3 down at the 13th hole, 1 but they won the 14th, 15th and 16th ; holes, and Hie game was then square. At the 17th Kirkwood drove out of bounds. Clark won the hole and halved the 18th. Wliitton was in poor form, j and out of touch with the fast greens. , lie was of little assistance to his l partner.
