THE AMATEURS

The winner of the junior race last evening was a newcomer, I. Thompson. Evidently, the handicapper had not seen this lad, for he was on a mark that was not in keeping with his size. For a beginner, he showed good promise, and will be tough even on a harder handicap. W. Paul and W. Webb, second and third respectively, managed to keep : away the rest of the field. Beth these lads put in good work for such a long race. Paul evidently finds his new cycle more to his liking. There was some delay before a start was made, owing to riders not being on hand to compete in the senior race. However, enough members were mustered to warrant a race being run. No doubt the lack of entries can be attributed to the races to be held at the Domain on Saturday next. The winner was the fast-improving L. Roberts. He certainly deserved his victory, as h 4 did most of the lapping. Coming round the last time, he put in his claim, to stall off strong challenges by the bunched field, a- * * * Nobert Casey was a surprise packet. He put in a wonderful finishing effort, to be downed by the barest of margins. Although he originally finished third, he was placed second by the committee, who upheld a protest against A. Mackie. Casey's effort after a hard ride was the feature of the event. He should improve still more. The whole field was together when the final sprint commenced. It was here that Angus Mackie bore down on the field in making his run. A protest was entered by F. Casey. This was upheld when Mackie admitted the accidental breach. After the above incident, F. Casey was placed third, but as he had been disqualified during the race, the third placing should have gone to Andrews. F. Casey, together with C. Galbraith, were put out of the contest through looking around during the course of the event. Now that these two members have been made an example of, the committee must see that in future this serious breach is not allowed to occur again. Last evening’s events resulted: MANUKAU CLUB. One Mile Junior Race —I. Thompson, 180yds, 1; W. C. Paul, 140yds, 2; W. AVebb 220yds, 3. Time, 2min 14 l-ssec. Eight started. Won by six lengths, a length between second and third. Ten-lap Senior Handicap.—L. Roberts, 150yds. 1; N. Casey. 3 90yds, 2; Andrews3. Time, 6min 45 2-ssec. Six started. A. Mackie finished second, but owing to a protest for boring, was disqualified. F. Casey and C. Galbraith were also disqualified for looking round.
