WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

MATAMATA BRANCH A successful afternoon was held on Tuesday by the Matamata Institute, when a good attendance spent a very enjoyable afternoon. Mrs. L. Ryan presided. Much important business was transacted, including the adoption of three months’ programme submitted by a. sub-committee, Mesdames Earkman, Flower. Findlater. Ryan. Schofield and J. P. White. A vote of sympathy to Mrs. G. G. Bell, whose father had recently passed away, was carried. Mrs. Jno. Montague, speaking on “Chopin.” gave an interesting outline of his life and achievements, afterward playing some of his music. Mrs. Montague is an outstanding pianist, well known in musical circles in New Zealand, and was heartily applauded. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Crowther. Hampton, Hemsley, Flower and Stubbing, during which good-bye was said to Mesdames Livingstone and Wilson, who are leaving shortly to visit England and the Continent, and to Mrs. F. G. Brown, who will reside in Morrinsville. An amusing competition. “Bring Your Oldest Photograph,” arranged by Mrs. Flower, caused much fun. The winner, Mrs. J. Buchanan, was presented with a beautifully embroidered apron. Several matters of local interest were discussed, a cake and recipe competition being arranged for the April meeting, the funds to go to help in the erection of a local rest and Plunket Room. HENDERSON BRANCH Mrs. Stewart, president of the Henderson Women's Institute. presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting in the Foresters’ Hall. An interesting and instructive demonstration of cooking by electricity was given by Mrs. Lovatt. During the evening Mrs. Beecroft, of Henderson, gave a solo. Miss L. Hart played her accompaniment. Supper was dispensed by the hostesses for the evening, Mrs. Scott and Miss Ellis. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Power Board for the demonstration given by Mrs. Lovatt. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. WELLSFORD For the purpose of forming a Women’s Institute for Wellsford and surrounding district, a meeting was recently held at the Wellsford Hall. Mrs. Dudley Dorman, the president of the Women’s Institute for the Aueklkand Province, was present and Mrs. Horn took the chair. Mrs. Dorman gave an interesting address, telling when and where Women’s Institutes were first formed, and what was done at the meetings. After officers for the Wellsford, Wayby and other districts had been elected, it was decided to hold monthly meetings. The gathering closed with a vote of thanks to Mrs. Dorman for her attendance at the meeting and for her valuable information. TE ATATU There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Te Atatu Women’s Institute, Mrs. Chadwick presiding, After business matters had been dealt -with Miss Ellis, of Henderson, gave a very helpful talk on dressmaking and also gave a practical demonstration of cutting out. Later Mrs. Willets sang and tea was served by Mrs. Love and Mrs. Roby. The- meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
