NOT WANTED
WIRELESS ON FERRIES The Devonport Steam Ferry Com pany is dismantling the wireless sets that were installed on the Devonport ferry boats, Makora and Toroa. The action has been taken to meet the objections of ferry boat users who complained that one of the delights of having a home across the harbour was the daily ferry trip—a particularly pleasant trip in the fine weather. These passengers found that recitals of racehorses and weights, and similar items of public information, interfered with peaceful enjoyment of the ferry ride. The company then limited the wireless entertainment to the musical portions of the programme and moved the loud speakers from amidships to the inside walls of the cabins. Boat users then complained about the quality of the programmes and the class of music coming over the air and further that the music, good or bad, was a hindrance to easy conversation. The company has taken the extreme step of cutting out the wireless altogether.
