GIFT TO BOYS’ BAND
CHEETAH SKIN TO BE WORN BY DRUMMER SOUTH AFRICAN’S PRESENT Mr. W. E. Sargent, of East London, Africa, who has made several, valuable gifts to the Auckland Zoo, has presented the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, with a cheetah skin which the donor asked should be handed to a boy’s band. Mr. Baildon has decided to send the skin to the Ponsonby Boys’ Band. The skin, which has been tanned and lined, has an aperture through which the drummers’ head will go. The legs and tail will serve to secure the skin about the drummer’s body. Mr. Sargent is at present in Auckland. He brought a consignment of African animals for the zoo, but owing to the difficulty of arranging a permit with the Department of Agriculture, which is vigilant to keep foot and mouth disease out of the country, the animals were housed temporarily in Taronga Park, Sydney’s zoo. The town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, has received advice that a permit has.now been issued, and the exhibits will be for-warded to Auckland.
