CIVIC

“ROMANCE OF RIO GRANDE” The Civic Theatre offered a genuine romantic treat again last night and will do so every day until Friday. It is the screen adaptation of “Conquistador,” a sparkling novel of the south-west by Katherine Fullerton Gerould, ably brought to the talking screen by Fox movietone, under the brilliant guiding hand of Director Alfred Santell. The story concerns two cousins, one a half American (Mexican on his mother’s side) and his Mexican cousin. They are jealous about a vast estate, the property of their grandfather, and particularly over Mary Duncan. This intriguing beauty, in the role of Carlotta, is too much for any man to resist. The remainder of the programme includes selections by Ted Henkel's Symphony Orchestra and by Fred Scholl at the Civic grand organ, also a sound gazette, talking comedy and a talkie item by the famous Kentucky Jubilee Singers. “Dove, Live and Laugh,” George Jessel’s starring vehicle produced by Fox Movietone, marks the return- to the screen after a long absence of Marcia Manon. Miss Manon, a former screen favourite with a considerable following, has been in retirement for several years, but was lured back by the offer of a role in “Love, Live and Laugh.” a talking comedy. Others in the strong supporting cast include Lila Lee, Kenneth Mac Kenna, Henry Kolker and David Rollins. Will K. Howard directed “Love, Live and Laugh,” which is coming to the Civic on Saturday.
