Nice, Even Fields For Ohinemuri
ANNUAL RACE FIXTURE OPENS AT PAEROA ON SATURDAY Splendid fields will be seen out at Paeroa on Saturday for the opening of the annual meeting of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club. The acceptances closed last night and they are very satisfactory, both as regards quantity and quality. A nice field of eight remains in the big event on Saturday, the Ohinemuri Cup, Royal Doulton, Maori Boy, Desert Glow, High Pitch and Antique representing first-class handicap form, with the versatile Pompeius and King’s Guard and the promoted hack Grand Tea to furnish additional material for a stirring contest. There are a dozen good ones in the sprint, the St. Patrick's Handicap, and eleven in the other open sprint, the Netherton High-weight. Plenty of Jumpers A pleasing feature is the rpanner in which the two jumping contests have filled. The Plurdles has drawn twelve, while in the McGuire Memorial Steeplechase there are ten engaged. Steeplechases on the Paeroa course provide a fine spectacle, for the terraced lawn slopes make a splendid point of vantage for the spectators. There are eleven in the two-year-old heat, while the biggest fields of the day will be seen out in the hack sprints, these attracting respectively 23 and 15 acceptors. Special train and steamer arrangements have been advertised for the racing on Saturday and Monday, and with the course in its present good order the meeting promises to be as enjoyable as any previously held at this popular sporting centre. The complete list of acceptances is as follow:
Promising Two-Year-Old Hard Words showed a lot of promise at Trentham in January. On the opening day of the Cup carnival he occupied third place to Jenny Diver and Green Linnet in the Fitzherbert Handicap, but perhaps his best effort at the meeting was a good second to Gesture in the Hopeful Stakes Handicap on the concluding day, which he followed up by a double success at the Takapuna meeting. Hard Words, who is a son of the imported stallion Diacquenod, gathers speed very quickly at the commencement of his races, and such a qualification will always stand him in good stead in big fields. The Aucklander is engaged at Trentham next week, and if started in the Plunket Nursery Handicap he will have a big army of backers. The team which F. D. Jones will race at Trentham and Awapuni will number three. Paquito has freshened up as a result of an easy time since the Dunedin meeting, and a couple of gallops this week showed him up very attractively. Tie ran a good race when he finished second to Nightmarch in the Hazlett Gold Gup at Wingatui last month, and he should perform well on the northern trip. The two-year-old, Dunraven, will be seen once at each of the northern meetings, in the North Island Challenge Stakes and the Sires’ Produce Stakes. He has not realised expectations so far, but he should do better in the autumn. His track work suggests that he will stay later on. Arikiwai shaped fairly well at Motukaraka, and he should improve from now. The only doubt in his case is soundness, but if he trains on he will win races.
