BILLIARDS CONTRACTS
LINDRUM AND McCONACHY SIGN UP BIG MONEY PAID Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The promoter, E. A. Cankin. announces that Lindrum and McConachy have signed a contract to play under his management for the greater part of next season. Both are due in London on September 29. WORLD’S RECORD Amid scenes of enthusiasm Lindrum smashed another world’s record at Memorial Hall by scoring 4,287 against Smith’s 358, perhaps the most sensational session in the history of the game. He compiled breaks of 1,417, 1,809 and 750 with amazing rapidity and actually scored 900 points by potting the red and with ordinary cannons (no nurseries). By way of contrast, in the course of another break he scored from 60 up to 1,500 without going in off once. All players agree it is a most astonishing performance and was not believed possible. Yet withal Lindrum finished up freshest. He broke down in his last effort at 750, through his ball kicking. Lindrum is to receive the highest salary ever paid to a professional in one season.
Davis and Newman have also signed up under the same auspices. The contracts in nowise prevent their competition in the championship should they desire to compete.
The rules governing the season differ from those at present operating. As the result of a conference of professionals today, all agreed, Lindrum being so far ahead, to honour him by handicapping him. The games will be on the points system. Lindrum will receive six points for each 1,000 break, and the others 10 points. Lindrum sails for Australia on April 11 and expects to return to London in September. He wili be engaged up to Christmas.
