EMPRESS, NEWTON
“Street Girl,” the main feature of the current programme at the Empress Theatre. Newton, is an appealing drama dealing with the adventures of a waif who rose to eminence as a violinist.
Betty Compson, who has always been popular with Auckland audiences, achieves an outstanding success as the timidly assertive little stranger in a new land. -Her playing of the violin is a particularly attractive feature of the picture, many “catchy” melodies, including “Broken-up Tune,” being played in truly admirable fashion She is ably supported by a specially selected cast, other players in prominent parts being John Harron, Ned Sparks, Jack Oakie, Guy Buccola and Joseph Caw thorn.
