Bingen Spiers is bred in the purple, being by Xelson Bingen—Miss Spiers, therefore own brother to Jean McElwyn. He showed great speed as a trotter, but was a bad breaker. If he paces correctly, the novices will be kept scrambling to get him. Lomar, a grey mare by Lord Althorpe, showed promising form at Blenheim last week. She is nicely placed tomorrow, and should earn some money. Mild Derby gave three sound displays toward the end of last season, and if he has gone along the right way since, will not be long in securing a prize. * * * Lady Author is one that looked like improving when last seen in action, and she should have a chance to make good at Ashhurst or Hastings. * =c« * Richmond Lass is not a good one, but last year at Wanganui she surprised by winning well over two miles. In the society she will meet tomorrow, the Ashhurst mare may repeat the dose. Sir Guy, hailing from the powerful Donald stable, will not be without friends in the big race tomorrow. He is said to be one of the best improvers seen out for some time. * * * Little Guy, the relative to Great Hope, is a nice young pacer that should not be long in reaching a higher grade. If he* is in good order tomorrow, he will keep the opposition busy. St. George, who hails from the same stable, is more than useful, and he will be quite at home among the company to be met at Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay. Gang Awa’ is a good pacer for her inches, and she promises to be fairly hard to off tomorrow in the principal event. If Logan’s Pride is ready for the fray, he will take a lot of beating in whatever heat his party decides to tackle. Over a short course he is a tough proposition. Last autumn Cora Tacks raced most, consistently, and her second to Great Delight in the New Plymouth Cup was a meritorious performance. When she strikes form again, Cora should be worth, keeping in mind. "Without scoring a. first certificate this season, Queen Elizabeth has put up some good essays, and her second to Wrackeen at the Wellington Cup meeting was of sufficient merit to warrant her receiving solid support at Ashhurst. When Sister Chris won at the Carterton Christmas fixture, she gave promise of adding to her account when

another suitable handicap was found for her. Two items at Ashhurst have attracted her party, so Chrissy will have a chance to show her ability. Baron Derby is a typical son of Xelson Derby, and although young at the racing game, bids fair to some day reach the high standard of his sire. The Baron looks like capturing a prize tomorrow. * * • Nelsonian won the novice race at Ashhurst last year. Tomorrow he is flying much higher, and should be treated with respect in any event L. Berkett steps him o ut’for. * * * Richore won the Manawatu Cup last year off the limit, going 4.39. In this year’s race he is 48yds behind (4.42), and the Corrigan representative, if in the right mood, may repeat the dose. Rangitero’s form at Otahuhu last month should be good enough guarantee that W. Hughes will have a chance of picking up a prize at either Ashhurst or Hastings with the trotter. Xelson Parrish has put up some good essays on the west coast of the other island, and he will be one that should prove a nuisance to the opposition this week. Parrish Belle has excellent breeding to recommend her as a young trotter, and it will be interesting to see how she shapes when given her first race tomorrow. If she does not score before coming home, the game is all wrong.
