Wiggins intends riding at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting over the week end in preference to the Paeroa fixture, and on the opening day at Trentham he will steer Cylinder, Moa Bird, Chief Joy, Te Awhina and Glenrossie. Kelso Lame During a schooling bout at Ellerslie this morning Kelso (R. Olive) got in close to one of the fences and chapped a tendon badly. He was subsequently very lame, and can be counted among the absentees in future. Paeroa Riders
The following riding engagements have been made for the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting at Paeroa on Saturday:—H. Dulieu, Glenstar, Mashoor and Owairaka; E. Ludlow, Oil King, Volimond, Kingfield and Norval Tea; J. Conquest, Measurer and Benighted; J. Cammick, Betterment and Grand Arch; and L. Dulieu, King Willonyx, Maori Boy, Little Toy and Awamutu.
Taneriri For Trentham Entrained for Trentham last evening was that consistent stake-earner Taneriri, who went South under the charge of his owner-trainer, H. Rama, to carry out an engagement in the Thompson Handicap at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. Taneriri has raced with distinction over middle distances since Christmas, and has rarely been out of a place, and as he has not yet reached the zenith of his powers he should be equal to a fine effort in the big mile. At the time of writing no rider had been announced for the Antagonist gelding. Has a Second Run Treasury showed all his pace in the hack sprint at the Franklin meeting, but On Top got the best of the start and he went with Treasury when the latter ran up to him. Half way up the straight Treasury looked to be well beaten, but to the general surprise he made a good effort over the last hundred yards and was probably a bit unlucky in being out of the money. Hitherto five'furlongs was as far as Treasury could get, but his late run on Saturday was instructive. In Firt Class Order Mashoor continues to run well in the High-Weight events on the flat, and after making most of the running at Pukekohe last Saturday he finished a good fourth. There is no doubt that Mashoor is in fine form, and as he has had a good deal of racing of late he will have it on a good many of the others when he is saddled up for the Steeplechase next Saturday at Paeroa. He has already won over country, for eighteen months ago he won that sensational steeplechase at Ellerslie and paid a huige dividend.
Shaped Badly Racing at Dargaville recently made King Willonyx look a much brighter prospect for the Pukekohe Handicap at Franklin on Saturday, but his apparent fitness did not assist him to win. He was ©ne of several which made an even dispatch difficult, and eventually the last to leave the tapes he remained in that position throughout. but for a momentary forward move at the half-mile. King Willonyx has engagements at Paeroa this week-end, and perhaps he will cut a better figure at this meeting. Brother to Carl Idem Carlaris. winner of the Buckland Hack Handicap at Pukekohe on Saturday, is an own brother to R. Hall’s other representative, Carl Idem. Page Boy Unlucky Backers of Page Boy in the Buckland Handicap at Pukekohe were receiving a nice price, and on the surface they appeared unlucky not to have collected one of the dividends. A. Tinker’s horse was warming up to his work at the turn just when he struck trouble. The former Ricoarton trained gelding has been a consistent sort since he came North a few weeks ago, a win and two thirds going to hi** credit in four starts.
Cannot Win Remember Haze's unique record of minor placings a season or two ago? One who bids fair to be on a similar plane is the four-year-old Sir Mond, who races in the Hon. E. W. Alison’s colours. Since the Australian-bred horse was brought across three yea.rs ago he has contested 15 races for three seconds and four thirds. He made two appearances at Pukekohe on Saturday, a third and a second resulting. He looked all over a winner in the Buckland Handicap when Aggressive caused the upset, but he ran about a great deal in the straight and turned victory into defeat. Beaten at Start The fine big Catmint gelding, Hannibal, drew near the fence in the Bombay Handicap, and as he had been showing promise on the tracks there was fair support for him. He los* his position at the start and trailed the field home. He will do better. Scratched
The speed merchant, Sea Song, was withdrawn from her engagement at Pukekohe on Saturday owing to there being a doubt as to whether she had sufficiently recovered from a cold contracted during the train journey to Te Aroha last week. If she does well she will probably go lu Paeroa with other members of W. Townsend’s stable.
