NORFOLK ISLAND TRADE

NEED FOR CONTINUANCE The question of keeping alive the trade between Auckland and. Norfolk Island occupied the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at a meeting today. After a letter from the proprietors of the Hinemoa stating that they could not take over the Norfolk Island trade, had been read, the chairman, Mr. M. Stewart, said it seemed that private enterprise did not want the trade. The Maui Pomare had sailed yesterday with a full cargo, probably because she might not be making another trip. It would be regrettable if the trade with Norfolk Island was lost as he believed that 95 per cent, of the cargo was composed of New Zealand goods. If the service was not kept up New Zealand merchants would lose the trade, which would go to Australia. It had been suggested, said the chairman, that the chamber convene a meeting of merchants interested in the trade, to see what could be done. The Hon. J. B. Donald, Minister of Industries and Commerce, had made it clear that Cabinet would not grant a subsidy. Mr. A. G. Lunn: He also made it clear that it would be a profitable trade. It was decided to call a meeting to decide a course of action.
