Golding’s Fast Quarter
ATHLETES AT CARLAW PARK No Lermond-Savidan Match
DESPITE the appearance of Leo Lermond, of America, and G. A. Golding, Australian champion, at Carlaw Park on Saturday, only a mediumsized crowd was present. There was some great running. The quarter-mile handicap saw Golding streak over the distance in 49 1-5. N. F. Cooper put up a fine performance in the three miles. From a 90yard handicap he won in 14.37 3-5. This represents a time less than 14.50 for the full distance.
During the afternoon a contreterhps occurred. An effort had been made to arrange a special I,oooyds race in which J. W. Savidan, Auckland and New Zealand champion, would meet Lermond. Savidan. however, declined to any distance less -than a As Lermond had informed the New Zealand Council he would run in distances up to I,oooyds only, the pair did not meet. Savidan later started in the mile handicap. The track had made a good recovery from the over-night rain, and, until the Golding-Savidan hitch, events were run off well to time. Lermond appeared in the half-mile. He was handicapped out of a chance of winning, and the race developed into a tussle among three big-handicap men, Spragg, Mitchell and Anderson. This trio led the field for the greater part of the journey. In the straight fc’pragg showed his superiority. The hundred yards handicap provided another win for M. O’Shea, who has been so successful at recent evening meetings. Roper was unfortunate in this event, failing by the narrowest of margins to catch O’Shea. Golding’s quarter was the star turn of the afternoon. A field of four started. Kerr-Taylor withdrew after maintaining a slight lead over Meredith and Henry for 220yds; Henry, who had been lying third, swept past Meredith at the beginning of the straight and was himself easily overtaken and beaten by Golding. The big Australian had made up his distance with long and graceful strides. His time was 2-ssec faster than any New Zealander has covered the distance. Undoubtedly Savidan lias not struck his true form. In his only appearance on Saturday—the mile handicap—his time was 4.25 l-ssec; and he has not done better this season. The race itself was interesting chiefly on account of the solid running of some men on long handicaps. Blow. Dolan and Evans ail put up good performances. #Both the overseas runners took part in the relay. Their team-mates were Morgan, of Otago, and Pawson, Wanganui. The race was over a mile, and was divided into a half, a quarter and two eighths. Four teams started. Pawson took the half and Barker beat him by 10yds. In spite of this Lermond was able to finish his quarter 60yds ahead of Henry. Morgan carried on the good work and Golding led the field in by 100yds. The cycling was a. triumph for S. Litchfield.
