NEW REGENT
“THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, from first to last, has done a wonderful job with its great musical extravaganza, “The Hollywood Revue,” which is now at the New Regent Theatre. It has shown us what talking films can do, and if they have reached this stage of perfection already, what next? Not one star, but dozens —names to conjure with in the motion picture world, pass in review before your eycs ; each with song, dance or skit, each, with his or her proper balance; each, often with a background of gorgeous girls in gorgeous settings, brilliantly illuminated with colour and sound. Twenty songs! v As many dances. Tremendous ensembles mark this super-musical production as the great parade of stars goes by with Marion Havies in male impersonation in a ballet number, “Tommy Atkins on Parade.” in which she both sings and dances; Norma Shearer and John Gilbert in a modern “Romeo and Juliet” number; Bessie Love in song and dance; Conrad Nagel with song and sparkling dialogue; Anita Page as beautiful as ever; Joan Crawford in a lilting song and dance act; Buster Keaton in one of his best screen laughs; Karl Hane and George K. Arthur; William Haines in one of his famous comedy skits; and also Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy; “Ukulele Ike.” the maestro of the instrument which gave him his name; Gus Edwards—Maris Dress - ler, famous comedienne, with Polly Moran in another; The Albertina Rasch ballet, the Brox Sisters, Jack Benny, the vaudeville humorist, Natacha Nattova —all these and many others, blended into one great revue.
