MUNICIPAL BAND

PROGRAMME AT TOWN HALL A concert given by the Auckland Municipal Band at the Town Hall on Saturday evening provided a large j audience with a most enjoyable enter- , tainment. Ivanov's “Caucasian Suite” was the j outstanding number. This typical j Eastern music was played with tine , effect, the work of the wood-wind section being particularly good. In the last number of the suite, "March of a Caucasian Chief,” very finS tonal effects were achieved, but the tempo appeared a little slow. The Fhjladel- j phia Symphony Orchestra, which re- j cently recorded this, toos the pmc _ ( faster, which gives this essentially wild j and swirling music better effect. Two marches composed by members of the band, “Ponsonby,” by Mr. H. C. McLennan, deputy-bandmaster, and “Newton,’ by Mr. F. Bowes, were warmly received. Both are brignt and attractive pieces that will prove welcome additions to the band’s already large rep€*rtoire. "Warm applause y, as accorded the composers when they appeared later in the evening in solo numbers, Mr. Bowes played as a cornet solo “Softly Sighing,” (“Der I reischutz”), and Mr. McLennan a. flute number, “Seventh Grand Solo. Miss Kay Christie was the soloist of the evening, singing “O Love. From Thy Power” (Samson and Delilah) and "O Flower of All the World. Miss Christie has very pleasing quality, and both numbers were sung with nice artistry. Both were encored. Other soloists were Mr. E. Pheloung. who played the clarinet solo, Les Alsaciennes,” and Mr. Roland .Tackson, who played a xylophone solo entitled “Bagatelle.” The overture from “Ruy a I tone poem, “Meditation. ' and a tan- ; tasia on Welsh national airs completed ' an enjoyable programme.
