INTER-CLUB ROWING
SIX CREWS RACE FOR SMITH SHIELD SHORE WINS AGAIN Shore continued on its winning way with a first and second on Saturday, when inter-club fours were rowed for the Smith Shield. Owing to the heavy sea running in the harbour the race was decided over a course inside the Hobson Bay railway embankment. Mr. T. Marshall was starter and umpire and Messrs. C. C. Cairns and C. H. Hunt were judges. The race was under the control of the Waitemata Club. Six crews started. North Shore No. 3 crew swamped while rowing across the harbour. The canvas was split and the crew was too late to start. Shore still holds the record of having won every Titer-club race this season. The crews were: West End: O. Felton, W. Bloxham, C. J. Wright, V. McFarlane, R. Collins (cox). Auckland: J. Bygate. E. Thorburn, H. Duck, W. Bridgart, F. Orrell (cox). Waitemata: C. Fear on, G. Barker, J. Beasley, R. Smith, Jones (cox). St. George’s: PI. Tong, I. Duncan, G. Fogerty, C. D’Authreau, J. Coote (cox). North Shore No. 1: W. Dean, F. Eaton, B. McCallum, S. Gardiner, Rapley (cox); No. 2. E. Korn, B. Seager, A. Coates, C. Oliver, McArthur (cox). The positions were:—Waitemata, 1; Auckland, 2; Shore No. 2,3; Shore No. 1,4: West End, 5; St. George, 6. From a good start Shore No. 2 was first away, closely followed by Waitemata. Waitemata took the lead early and at the quarter-mile was ahead of
Shore Xo. 1. Waitemata could not keep up the pace and Shore Xo. 1 and Xo. - went ahead. West End dropped back and did not finish. Shore Xo. 1 and Xo. 2 had a great tussle for first place, X'o. 1 crew gaining: the decision by five feet. Snore Xo. 2 finished two lengths ahead of Auckland, Waitemata and St. George's, which, were bunched in that order. The result was: Shore Xo. 1 .. .. . X Shore Xo. 2 .. ~ . 2 Auckland .. 3
MASON PAIRS
EASY WIN FOR WEST END Pour crews started in the junior pair-oared race for the Mason Cup. The race was rowed under the control of St. George's. Mr. V. Hargreaves was starter and Mr. V. Dunne judge. The course was the same as in the Smith Shield race. Shore was unable to start. The crews and positions were: West End.—O. Felton, W. Bloxham, R. Collins (cox), 1. Auckland. —R. K. Stacey, A. C. Andrews, Stephenson (cox), 2. St. George’s.—H. Tong, J. Cootc, J. Coote (cox), 3. Waitemata.—W. Baddy, G. Barker, Pepper (cox), 4. The crews got away to an even start and Waitemata led narrowly for the first quarter-mile. West End then went to the front and won by six lengths from Waitemata, with Auckland third. AUCKLAND TRIALS
Four crews from the Auckland Club j entered for trial pairs rowed on Sa.tur- j day afternoon for trophies donated by Messrs. W alker and Hall. Barratt by a canvas after a great race that wa§ won in tlie last half-dozen strokes. Final.—Rose and Cleal beat Coutts and Irvine by three lengths. Rose was away first at the start and led to the finish.
